“Every subject’s duty is to the King’s; but every subject’s soul is his own”, said William Shapespheare. I believe freedom is a state of mind. It lies in being bold, and having courage. It is an open window, through which pours the sunlight of human spirit and dignity. Only to those who have been in prison does freedom have such great meaning. Yet, today, all of us yearn for freedom, though when we think we receive it, we use it as if it were a mere toy! We don’t even know what freedom is, for we never seem to realise its cost. There’s no greater freedom than the freedom to be yourself. Give yourself that gift, and choose to surround yourself with those who appreciate you exactly as you truly are. And once you give yourself that freedom, no one can take it away from you. Abraham Lincoln once said, “those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves”. Life without liberty is like a body without spirit. I trust we will all learn what freedom is someday, and may we never forget that freedom isn’t free.
